Speed Up Browsing

When you connect to a web site your computer sends information back and forth. Some of this information deals with resolving the site name to an IP address, the stuff that TCP/IP really deals with, not words. This is DNS information and is used so that you will not need to ask for the site location each and every time you visit the site. Although Windows XP and Windows XP have a pretty efficient DNS cache, you can increase its overall performance by increasing its size. You can do this with the registry entries below:

Make a new text file and rename it to dnscache.reg. Then copy and paste the above into it and save it. Merge it into the registry.

Set Permissions for Shared Files and Folders

Sharing of files and folders can be managed in two ways. If you chose simplified file sharing, your folders can be shared with everyone on your network or workgroup, or you can make your folders private. (This is how folders are shared in Windows 2000.) However, in Windows XP Professional, you can also set folder permissions for specific users or groups. To do this, you must first change the default setting, which is simple file sharing. To change this setting, follow these steps:

1. Open Control Panel, click Tools, and then click Folder Options.
2. Click the View tab, and scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings list.
3. Clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
4. To manage folder permissions, browse to the folder in Windows Explorer, right-click the folder, and then click Properties. Click the Security tab, and assign permissions, such as Full Control, Modify, oRead, and/or Write, to specific users.

You can set file and folder permissions only on drives formatted to use NTFS, and you must be the owner or have been granted permission to do so by the owner.

FDISK Tutorial

The Basics of Fdisk:
Primary partitions are the only one that are bootable. They're always the C: drive when active. Normally you can only have one (more with some special tricks etc.) Extended partitions are needed when you want more than one partition. You can only have ONE Extended partition. Logical Drives come into the Extended partition. They are handy since you know that you can only have one Primary and one Extended so you can get more than only two partitions. They would be your D:, E:, etc. drives.

First you need to reboot your system with the Boot Disk inserted.

1.At the A: prompt start "FDISK."

2.If asked to use Large Disc support say Yes.

3.The first screen looks like this:

Create Dos Partition or Logical Drive
Set Active Partition
Delete Partitions or Logical D

Disable Attachment restrictions in Outlook from Office

Make XP boot even Faster

Microsoft has chosen a completely different path for XP and it's boot features by trying to incorporate as much support for newer fastboot BIOSes that are on most current motherboards. They built XP in such a way as to make it able to take advantage of features in these new BIOSes, and one of the coolest things is a small application called bootvis. bootvis.

Bootvis watches everything that loads at boot time, from the moment the OS begins to load just after POST (Power On Self-Test) to the moment you get to a usable Desktop. Some programs, most notably Norton AntiVirus 2002, suck up valuable seconds before you can actually DO anything even though you're at the Desktop. bootvis generates a trace file that you load and can then "see" a visual representation of what's happening. Every file, driver, hard drive read/write, etc., is recorded. You can then use bootvis to optimize the loading of files during the boot sequence. bootvis will rearrange the ways these very files are stored on the hard drive, thereby improving the boot time dramatically.

XP Hibernate Option

Whenever you want to logoff, shut down or reboot your Windows XP machine you have only 3 choices
(1) Standby ONLY IF the ACPI/APM function is properly enabled BOTH in your motherboard's BIOS AND in WinXP!
(2) Restart
(3) Shutdown.

To properly enable Hibernation in WinXP:

Start button -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> Hibernate tab -> check Enable hibernate support box -> Apply/OK -> reboot.

NOTE: If the Hibernate tab is unavailable your computer does NOT support it!
For some reason Microsoft did NOT enable the 4th option:
(4) Hibernate, which should be available on power saving (ACPI) enabled PCs and laptops.
But you CAN bring it back: just hold the Shift key while the Shut down menu is displayed on your screen, and notice the Standby button being replaced by a new, fully functional Hibernate button, which can be clicked with the left button of your mouse.

If you release the Shift key, the Hibernate option will disappear once again, to be replaced by Standby

Remove Shared Documents

Open Regedit(Start- Run- Regedit) and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer My Computer NameSpace DelegateFolders

There will see a sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. By Deleting this you can remove the 'Other Files stored on This Computer' group.

Upgrading to Windows XP

You can upgrade a computer that runs Windows 98, 98SE, or Me to Windows XP Home Edition. Those same versions, along with Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows 2000 Professional, can be upgraded to Windows XP Professional.

(1).To ensure a smooth upgrade and avoid networking problems, follow these tips before starting the upgrade:

(2)Install all network cards. XP will detect them and automatically install the right drivers.

(3)Have your Internet connection available. The XP setup process will connect to a Microsoft server to download the latest setup files, including changes that have been made since XP was released.

Some programs are incompatible with XP and can cause networking problems. Un-install these programs. After the upgrade is complete and the network is working, re-install XP-compatible versions of these programs: Internet Connection Sharing, NAT, Proxy Server Anti-Virus Firewall.

There are many special features in the Google search engine that can help us find what we find. In between you may already know about it.

Some of the features popular on Google, as quoted from Techdream, Friday (17/10/2008), is:

1. Simple mathematical calculation.
Google search engine can perform simple mathematical calculations such as Answer, multiplication, division, or reduction, as have the ability to function as a calculator. Type the numbers you want calculated and its sign in the calculation to the search engine box, for example: 5 +3 * 5, and press the Enter key or click the Search button on Google.

2. Currency conversion.
Currency conversion facility is also available in the Google search engine. Simply type the number sign followed by the currency you want to convert from the currency to a currency in the box to the desired search engine, for example: 100 USD in INR, and press Enter.

3. See the time in different cities around the world.
You can find out the local time in a city or other countries. Just type in the time [name of city / state] in the search box to find out easily with the local time in a city / state. Eg: time in Barcelona.

4. Conversion unit.
In addition to functioning as a calculator, Google search engine can also convert your size. For example: 100 inch in meters.

5. Check your spelling.
Google also have facilities to check spelling, the spelling words for common things such as names and places, which may not appear in the spell check program or dictionary standard.

Extend battery life in the BackTrack

Can your CPU do this? The idea is, I have a notebook and I want to extend the time of working on the nootbook without being pluged into the electric outlet. There are many possibilities how to do it. It definitely means that you have installed linux based operating system. You can save something by taking away modules that are unnecessary for hardware or by reducing the backlight of LCD. And what is the second biggest time glutton right after LCD? Yes, it is the CPU. The are two possible solutions how to save something from the battery. So called throttling is simply a thing that inserts into the processor a command “don´t do anything, don´t count anything, don´t search anything”. The time of this depends on the setting and it can last miliseconds up to seconds. The processor takes the same amount of electricity but it cools itself and therefore the cooling fan does not turn on so often and you should save something. What saves for sure is to bring down the CPU frequency.

CPU with reduced frequency is good to use when you work with a text or when you are doing a not so demanding calculation work. When reducing the frequency the CPU should not get warm so much. Unfortunately I have not tested it so far so I can´t tell the temperature differences before and after. But I´m pretty sure that this gave me about 15-20 minut of the battery life. Then when taking away modules such as sound card, ethernet, wi-fi, etc. simply everything except the keyboard LCD HDD Touchpad, the notebook will last for 4 hours. And thats nice. I´m planning to test it besides this in combination with throttlingem, but about this next time.

And now, how to do it. If you find out that your processor supports scaling (steping) you can go further. So you can install utility cpufrequtills002 from kernel.org. My distro Backtrack3 (Slackware) had some troubles with compilation, so I downloaded from http://slax.hosting4p.com/modules.php module cpufreq.ko (*.ko yes it´s from an older distribution, now it uses *.lzm). Converting is possible with utility ko2lzm. After converting add cpufreq.lzm to modules folder and restart. After restart it was necessary in my case to load module for CPU frequency steping - p4-clockmode.
